Pilar Rioja's Fall Engagement 2009 at Repertorio Espanol includes two New York Premieres titled "Sevillanas Moriscas" and "Tango Andaluz," respectively: "Sevillanas Moriscas" (Moorish Sevillanas) is an upbeat and energizing choreography. Ms. Rioja has based this dance on the traditional "Sevillanas" dance style, which is credited as the root of many Spanish dances, and showcases Flamenco's Gypsy and Moorish influences. "Tango Andaluz" (Andalusian Tango) is not to be confused with the Argentinean tango, this popular woman's solo dance expresses sensuality through syncopation. Based on the 20th century's style with the same name and with origins in South America and Africa, this dance has steady rhythms consisting of even beats. Ms. Rioja adds nuance to this classic style with a refreshing new choreography and her proven mastery of Spanish dance. The program will also include the dances "Guajira," a popular flamenco dance with origins in 16th century Cuba; "Grave Assai & Fandango," stylized flamenco dances in two parts, slow and fast; and "Dona Rosita la soltera" based on Federico Garcia Lorca's theatrical masterpiece about a woman who realizes that she has become a spinster past the marriageable age.
