About nytheatre.com Reviews

nytheatre.com reviews as many shows as possible, in all sectors of the NYC theatre community, because we think it's important for readers and audience members to have as much information as possible about the theatre offerings in NYC, and also because we think artists deserve commentary and feedback about their work, whether or not they have an impressive publicity budget. In 2007 we reviewed approximately 950 productions, including every show in the New York International Fringe Festival (something we've done every year since 2002).

Reviews are posted as soon after we see the show as practicable. Reviews remain on nytheatre.com forever, accessible after a show has closed via our archive.

nytheatre.com Reviewers

Our reviewing staff is led by nytheatre.com's editor/founder Martin Denton and currently has more than 60 members. Almost all of our reviewers are volunteers and are theatre artists themselves—directors, playwrights, actors, stage managers, etc., who bring their individual perspectives to what they write and are broadening their own experience of theatre by serving in this capacity.

nytheatre.com reviews are always just one person's response to a production. We never think of ourselves as tastemakers or judges; we just appreciate great theatre and try to provide independent, lively, provocative wrtiing about it.

How We Choose Shows to Review

This section is written by nytheatre.com's editor, Martin Denton, who makes the final decisions about what gets reviewed.

"If we could, we'd review every show we list. But that's just not feasible, so we have to make choices. I make my choices based on how many shows need to be reviewed in a given week, availability of reviewers, whether a company has been reviewed before (or recently), and a variety of other, often intangible, factors.

"The information you provide on your press release/listings materials is the very best way to get my attention. Provide clear, interesting, vivid, hype-free facts about what your show is about, what's innovative or unusual about your approach, and who the artists are who are involved with it. You or your press agent can and should contact me directly to provide details on this. I enjoy getting to know you and prize the relationships we have developed with members of the theatre and press community.

"A very important consideration is lead time! We schedule reviews as much as a month in advance sometimes. Please send your preferred press dates to me via email as early as possible. Invitations to a show that's happening the next day or even the next week are often impossible for us to honor, because so many of you are on-the-ball and scheduling press well in advance."
