WHAT'S HERE: We asked FringeNYC participants to answer the following three questions:
   1. What is your show about and what can audiences expect when they see it?
   2. Why is your show pertinent to today's times and/or why should your show be the choice for audiences to see?
   3. Why did you choose to present this show?

Gem! A Truly Outrageous Parody

Author: Amanda Allan; music by Tyler Walker

Gem! Is a parody musical that pays tribute to the 1980's iconic cartoon "Jem and the Holograms". It's an original musical where the audience gets to follow Gem as she and her band try to battle the evil rockers to save their orphanage and gain control of the title of "Most Awesome Band Ever!"  Expect lots of wigs, totally tubular dance numbers, and a holograph machine named Cinergy.

Within the past three years we have seen the rise of The Transformers, Alvin and the Chipmunks and soon the movie version of G.I. Joe. We thought it was time some FEMALE retro icons were represented in the industry, so we took it upon ourselves to pay homage the best way we knew how...by dressing up in bright costumes and wigs and putting on a show. If you watched the cartoon as a kid, you should come see this production. You'll remember things you forgot that you forgot.  If you haven't seen the original cartoon you should come anyway to see what all the fuss is about!  Also, it's a good time and a show you can sit back and laugh at.

We presented it a couple of times at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater to sold-out audiences.  After hearing the feedback on the first two shows we thought there was no better place to debut it than the FringeNYC, and we were lucky enough to have them agree!
