FringeNYC Previews
Big Beat/Back Flow
Produced by Asami Morita+Nichole Arvin
Two emerging choreographers, Asami Morita and Nichole Arvin, bring their energy and creativity to the stage melding the audience and performers together. They communicate through noise and music, forming a soundpainting, where every gesture dictates the movements and conducts the music. This time the audience is engaged and is not just an innocent bystander, but can be part of the action and fun.
Nowadays with the popularity of TV, the internet, and the growing technology based media network, people communicate in impersonal ways. Similarly, in modern dance performances, the audience tends to be detached from the action on stage. There seems to be an invisible fence that makes the audience passive observers. We will bring the audience over the fence to interact more directly and share in the experience. It will truly be a unique live performance, with live music, and a live audience. It will be a great opportunity to bring people together under one roof and have everyone unite, interact, and have a good time.
I wanted to introduce this performance at FringeNYC because the diversity of the audience would really make this piece work. Since the structure of the festival presents a variety of performance art forms, the audience will not be limited to people who are only interested in a certain category of performance. It makes it a great opportunity to bring people together and have them mix and have a good time, whether or not they like modern dance. My challenge is to perform a modern dance concert that can truly unite the house. Engaging the audience is the focus of this performance and plays an important part in the work itself.
