Ascension

Produced by Robinson Williams Productions

Author: Cynthia G. Robinson

Story takes place in 1850 on a plantation in Alabama. Explores the relationship between Ruth, an enslaved woman, and Jacob, her enslaved husband, as they cope with Ruth's long-time sexual relationship with James Carlisle, their owner. Mathilda, an enslaved woman, born free, offers Ruth methods of "gynecological resistance" to help reclaim reproductive control over her body and sexuality.

This show is a slice of American history not fully explored in the history books. It is an historical examination of the complex hierarchy that exists between race and gender at a time when conversations about race and gender are at the heart of American politics. The play unveils the foundation of beliefs and values which continue to permeate our society today. It also explores the very secret history of resistance to sexual exploitation practiced by slave women.

As a native New Yorker, it has always been my dream to share this piece with a New York audience; thus this will be the New York premiere. It gives voice to characters rarely seen on the American stage. The show presents a more human, less instructional/educational, raw perspective on the "slavery story". It is not a documentary, but a love story, a very personal look at the journey of African American relationships and the experience of African American women in America. As an African American woman, the story is very close to my heart and I carry the legacy and spirit of Ruth, the lead character, with me wherever I go.
