Woyzeck or The Endless Cycle

nytheatre.com q&a preview by Tim Cusack
November 7, 2012

What is your job on this show?
Actor.

Do you like to read plays, or just perform them?
I used to think that I enjoyed reading plays, but I'm in grad school at the moment and so have to read A LOT of them all the time. I've discovered I understand a play so much better when I'm actually doing it.

What was the last show you saw that really excited you, and why?
Dan Fishback's Material World at the Dixon Place HOT Festival this past July. Imagining Madonna and Britney Spears boarding with a Jewish communist family in 1920s Brooklyn was pretty audacious. The fact that Dan pulled it off and that it made perfect sense while managing to be moving, funny and politically astute was nothing short of miraculous.

How did you meet your fellow artists/collaborators on this show?
As mentioned I'm in grad school getting my MA in Theatre. The director/adaptor, producer, dramaturg, co-writer, and costume designer are ALL classmates. Even though this is officially an academic program (as opposed to a conservatory-style MFA), the talent of my peers is really inspiring.

People who like which of the following recent Broadway shows would also probably like your show: THE BOOK OF MORMON, ONCE, DEATH OF A SALESMAN, CLYBOURNE PARK?
DEATH OF A SALESMAN

Who are your heroes?
Charles Ludlam because he defied categories that attempted to limit him as an actor, director, playwright, or designer, and because he always saw the potential in the people around him that the commercial theater overlooked.
