Naked & Crazy: True Stories from Meghan Gambling & Sascha q&a preview by Sascha Alexander
July 24, 2012

What is your job on this show?
Playwright and Actress.

Who are your heroes?
The Muppets, specifically, Animal, The Swedish Chef, and the Hecklers. Cheryl Strayed aka "Dear Sugar" - her blog is... everything. Ana Deveare Smith, Lisa Kron and Eve Ensler. Amber Krzys, Marie Forleo, and Sheila Kelley. Kristen Wiig, Jane Krasinski, Judy Greer, and Amy Poehler FOR OBVIOUS REASONS. And OMG Penelope Cruz! What?! You are a fireball and a risk-taker and everything you do is flawless!! Give it to me!

Complete this sentence: My show is the only one in FringeNYC that...?
...makes eating disorders funny! (And sexy. And maybe even redemptive.) HAHA! Just see it! You'll see what I mean!!

In your own words, what do you think this show is about? What will audiences take away with them after seeing it?
The show is about the areas of our lives that we consistently botch up, humiliate ourselves around, or can't gain control over. Those things that show up for us again and again and again in every relationship, in every step forward. The things that we suck at. The humiliation, the ugliness, the HILARITY of those places!! And how somehow, even though we feel lost in those part of ourselves, our greatest truths always lie there as well. The show is about facing yourself. And then once you're able to see clearly, deciding what comes next. It's about growing up.

Which “S” word best describes your show: SMOOTH, SEXY, SMART, SURPRISING?
Smart. Surprising is a close second.

Can theatre bring about societal change? Why or why not?
Ohhhhh my God, are you kidding?! Absolutely!! Theater is a place of expression! It's uncensored, it's alive, it's immediate! When you write something smart, moving, and true, people will leave BURSTING with things to say about it. I can remember few movie theaters that I've sat in, but hundreds of plays that I've seen, because as an audience member, more is demanded of you. Your attention, your empathy, your pathos is part of the exchange! And in solo-performances like mine and Meghan's... theater is the only way. Where else can you stand in front of people and move them personally, intellectually, and emotionally, just by confessing parts of yourself?!? It gives me chills!!!
