Cause of Failure q&a preview by Sally Burtenshaw
July 23, 2012

What is your job on this show?

What was the last show you saw that really excited you, and why?
That would be "The Other Place" by Sharr White with Laurie Metcalf - directed by Joe Mantello. It took me on a journey - with so many twists and turns and then totally slayed me at the end. Simple yet creative and relevant set - staged beautifully -and I thought and still think about it. When I first read "Cause of Failure". - I was taken on a similar yet fantastical journey that has great power and meaning and will leave audiences thinking about it after the show.

Why did you want to be part of FringeNYC?
Because you meet so many wonderful artists who are making theatre with great love and passion for their craft. Most of the shows are produced on a low budget - so the inventiveness and creativity is very high. It's fun, hectic, wacky but you might just see some of the most talented new playwrights and directors out there - wonderful actors of course! but also crew too - designers - movement directors, sound designers, etc. This is my 3rd Fringe Festival and I've met some great people and made lasting friendships.

Why did you want to write/direct/produce/act in/work on this show?
I wanted to act in this play because it resonated with me - not only as an unusual and well written play but personally also - as I recently went through a similar experience with my Mum. It's a story of a great love "in action" between a mother and daughter and though there is loss - the story is also filled with humor and fantasy and hope...

Groucho, Chico, Harpo, or Zeppo?
Harpo - he never spoke but was always in action - behaviour is all!

Why should people come to FringeNYC this summer, rather than the beach, mountains, or the latest movie blockbuster?
I think people should go to the beach and the movies and the mountains (especially the mountains!)this summer and also make time come to FringeNYC. You cannot quite beat seeing "live" theatre - and Fringe NYC offers some of the best and brightest at affordable prices!!
