Under the Skiff

nytheatre.com q&a preview by Ms Maja Bieler
October 28, 2012

What is your job on this show?
A bit of everything... This piece is devised and co-written by Jennyfer Sargent, Audrey Lamarque and myself. Jennyfer Sargent and I are the two actors, and we've worked out the conception of set, costumes and sound together even if I've been responsable for making the soundtrack....

Where were you born? Where were you raised? Where did you go to school?
I was born in Gunnared, suburbs of Gothenburg, Sweden. Raised in Gothenburg and Västerås (smaller city close to Stockholm) and went to public school in Gothenburg and Västerås and then Theatre School in Mölnlycke (Sweden) and Paris (France).

Complete this sentence: My show is the only one opening in NYC this fall that...?
...is bilingual (Trilingual in countries not speaking English) with half of it spoken in untranslated Swedish. And that everyone can understand :)

How did you meet your fellow artists/collaborators on this show?
All collaborators in Under The Skiff have studied at the international theatre school Jacques Lecoq in Paris, France. We've met through our work in the Parisian, "physical theatre circuit". Me and my clownpartner Jennyfer Sargent collaborated for the first time in 2002, when creating the devised work "Vile Things Precious" cowritten and directed by David Irving. Even though we're based on opposite sides of the Atlantic Ocean, we try to continue and develop our fruitful and very complementary collaboration.

Which “S” word best describes your show: SMOOTH, SEXY, SMART, SURPRISING?
Surprisingly Smart with Smooth moments of Sexy Laughter ;-)

Can theater bring about societal change? Why or why not?
YES. Any kind of communication can make a change. Theatre (ART) is one of the greatest ways to communicated with people, since it's (or at least can be, when well done) Universal.
