What is your show about?
When Blanca invites Paul to her ranch in New Mexico for the Summer, he thinks it's for an artist's retreat, but it's also to help keep his gay bromantic college buddy Alonso, Blanca's brother, on his medication; Tormented painters, sexual obsession, and crossed boundaries combine for a scorching new play.
Where were you born? Where were you raised? Where did you go to school?
Parents from Jersey, was born in California, raised in South Florida, School was New World School of the Arts in Miami and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Trained as an actor, not realizing I'm actually a playwright. I still act occasionally when I have some downtime, usually once a year or so.
Why do you do theater (as opposed to film, or TV, or something not in the entertainment field)?
I forget who said it first, but Film is a record of something that happened, whereas Theatre happens right in front of you. I love that visceral connection actors get with the audience, as well as the mental participation the audience contributes- an actor can stand on a bare stage and say she's on the moon and the audience will go along with that, but if you wanted to film that scene, you'd need to build a whole convincing moon set...
How did you meet your fellow artists/collaborators on this show?
Roberto Alexander, who plays Alonso, was in (and won a PCTF Outstanding Supporting Actor award for) my play "The Taint of Equality" last year. Emilio Paul Tirado, who plays Paul, was in the first public reading of my play "The Empress of Sex", which was produced by The Hive in 2011; I had a feeling he'd be great for this, and I asked him to audition. Neysa Lozano and W. Derek Jorden are both new to me, and in fact this is Derek's first show in New York, he just moved here six weeks ago. Our fight choreographer Teddy Lytle I met through Joan Kane; he was in a couple of the most recent plays she's worked on. They're all great.
Which “S” word best describes your show: SMOOTH, SEXY, SMART, SURPRISING?
If you had ten million dollars that you had to spend on theatrical endeavors, how would you use the money?
I would love to have a theatre complex with several small theaters in it, and also with cheap rehearsal spaces and actor housing. People are always looking for space in this city.
