Gun Control Theatre Action

nytheatre.com q&a preview by Caridad Svich
March 17, 2013

What is your job on this show?
playwright, co-producer, publisher.

What is your show about?
An evening of new plays written in support of gun control by Neil LaBute, Yvette Heyliger, Chiori Miyagawa, Winter Miller, August Schulenburg, Saviana Stanescu, Caridad Svich and more directed by John Moletress of force/collision.

When did you know you wanted to work in the theater, and why?
I think writing for the theatre is a beautiful crazy worthwhile endeavor. The desire to write for live perfomance really took hold for me when I was in high school. It seemed to me one of the strangest yet most rewarding of writing journeys one could take.

What are some of your previous theater credits? (Be specific! Name shows, etc.)
I have written many plays, among them a trio of stage adaptations of major novels from Latin America: THE HOUSE OF THE SPIRITS, IN THE TIME OF THE BUTTERFLIES, and LOVE IN THE TIME OF CHOLERA. Other works of mine include 12 OPHELIAS, IPHIGENIA CRASH LAND FALLS ON THE NEON SHELL THAT WAS ONCE HER HEART (a rave fable), THE BOOTH VARIATIONS (co-written with Todd Cerveris), and MAGNIFICENT WASTE.

Are there any cautions or warnings you’d like to make about the show (e.g., not appropriate for little kids)?
Some of the material among the plays featured in the GUN CONTROL THEATRE ACTION are disturbing in subject matter and there is adult language as well.

Which famous person would you most like to get a fan letter from: Meryl Streep, Lindsay Lohan, Steven Spielberg, Philip Seymour Hoffman?
Meryl Streep

If you had ten million dollars that you had to spend on theatrical endeavors, how would you use the money?
Continue to publish new writing for the stage and produce a multiple-year program of free theare in NYC in collaboration with international partners.
