Mission and History

Online since 1997, nytheatre.com was one of the first theatre information/review websites on the Internet. nytheatre.com is a free web-based resource that serves millions of readers every year by providing them with independent, accurate, and easily navigated information about the theatre scene in the New York City metro area. nytheatre.com's mission is to highlight, nurture, promote, and advance the work of thousands of theatre practitioners making groundbreaking and foundational art in New York City to ensure that theatregoers have an easy and enjoyable experience navigating choices on Broadway, off Broadway or at indie theater productions.

nytheatre.com differs from other theatre sites by focusing on this indie theatre community,  the incubator for new artists, new forms, new styles, and new ideas. nytheatre.com communicates to readers the dynamism,  richness and variety of new American drama and theatre as it is encountered in New York City.

Founding Editor Martin Denton began the site as "Martin's Guide to New York Theatre" back in 1996. A year later it became nytheatre.com. Martin continues as editor and chief reviewer for the site. Martin is also Executive Director of nytheatre.com's parent company, The New York Theatre Experience, Inc. (NYTE), a nonprofit corporation.

nytheatre.com is a project of the nonprofit corporation, The New York Theatre Experience, Inc. (NYTE). It's a digital magazine about the theater scene in the New York City area. Online since 1996, nytheatre.com exists to level the playing field for contemporary American drama and new theatre work created in the indie sector, and to convey our experience of this work to our readers.
